Potato and Bell Pepper in Tomato and Onion Gravy

For this recipe specially we need "caraway seeds" /"khummel" and white pepper (Weisser Pfeffer) which are commonly used in German cooking. My entire family loved the aroma and taste of it. Again, I don't like using too many spices in a single dish. So I prepared a pure vegetarian dish with only three spices.(knummel , white pepper and red chilly flakes). Without wasting time, let me go ahead with the recipe .....:-)

This dish goes well with any kind of bread.

Ingredients:

3-4 medium size tomato (chopped)
1 1/2 medium size onion ( 1 onion chopped into big pieces + 1/2 onion chopped finely)
1 small size bell pepper (chopped)
1 small size potato ( chop into cubes and boil )
1 tsp white pepper
1/2 tsp caraway seeds
1-2 tsp chilly flakes/chilly powder
4-5 tsp of butter
salt to taste

How To Prepare?
  • Heat 1 tsp of butter and saute the chopped tomatoes until it becomes soft or raw smell goes off. After it cools down grind into a smooth paste. (add little water if required while grinding)
  • In a same frying pan, heat 1 more tsp of butter and saute chopped big pieces of onion until it becomes golden brown. After it cools down grind it into a smooth paste. ( add little water if required while grinding)
  • In the same pan, heat 2-3 tsp of butter again , add 1/4 tsp of caraway seeds, finely chopped onion and saute for 2-3 mins. Now add chopped bell peppers, saute until raw smell of pepper and onion goes off.
  • Add boiled potato cubes. Give a quick stir.
  • Now add ground onion and tomato puree and mix it well .
  • Time to spice up the curry..... Add white pepper powder, remaining caraway seeds and chilly flakes and salt and mix it well.
  • Add little water to make it thin. Let it boil for 5-7 mins.
  • Serve hot by adding a cube of butter on top along with bread.

Note:
  • Above recipe makes medium spice curry. You can add more /less pepper and chilly flakes according to your taste.
  • You can also use ready tomato puree available in market . I have not tried it :-) , if you get a chance to try, please let me know.
